The 1989 discovery of this giant, ancient elephant-like creature opened an unprecedented window onto Ohio’s Ice Age. Archaeologists, biologists, and geologists studied the mastodon’s nearly complete remains (including its last meal) and other Ice Age animals and plants. This presentation will describe their findings and address the question of whether ancient human hunters or environmental changes drove mastodons into extinction.
Hosted by the Friends of Hopewell Culture Historical Park and Ohio University Chillicothe.

These dances have been modified to respect the actual songs and dances used in sacred religious ceremonies. A representative from the Dineh’Tah group will begin the performance with an Ohio history related presentation on General William T. Sherman and his role in peace treaties through the Indian Peace Commission of 1867-1868.

Join us November 6th at 6:00 pm at the auditorium in Bennett Hall at Ohio University Chillicothe for an hour long conversation on Shawnee history, culture, and connection to ancestral landscapes. Delve into how fundamental beliefs and social practices connected to natural cycles have guided the Shawnee's environmental strategies, rooted in over 15,000 years of lived experience. This program highlights the intricate link between cultural fluidity, conservancy, and the necessity of adapting to the environment. Learn more
